Walking Into the Light
University School's Walk Team raised $4,267.25, the largest donation of any school in Northeast Ohio, to capture the first place trophy at LifeAct's (formerly the Suicide Prevention Education Alliance) 11th annual Into the Light Walk. The event was held recently at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Over 20 University School students, teachers, staff members, and families participated. Mason Monahan'15, who led the US team, has been actively involved in the organization since his freshman year.
"My friend, recent US graduate Walker Chieffe '14, introduced me to the program," he said. "Ever since I went to my first Walk with him in ninth grade, I have dedicated myself to the cause. The Walk never fails to inspire me. I'm very grateful to have been able to attend every year since I've gotten involved."
The goals of the event are: to "shine the light" on depression and suicide prevention; to help those suffering from depression or survivors of suicide to experience healing in a safe, anonymous way; and to raise funds to support the group's proven prevention education program, Recognizing Teen Depression and Preventing Suicide, which is delivered in 110 Northeast Ohio high schools, including University School.
