US Wins Academic Challenge

University School recently enjoyed success on Academic Challenge, WEWS-TV 5's academic competition for students representing schools from throughout Northeast Ohio. The US team of Nathan Fakult '15, Liam O'Toole '16, and Rohan Garg '17 battled against students from Loudonville High School and Rootstown High School, earning a winning score of 490 points.

Patrick Gallagher, Upper School Co-Director and Dean of Faculty, and Daniel Carlson, Upper School math teacher, coach the team.

Each week, on Academic Challenge, three teams compete for points by answering questions covering such topics as math, science, history and current events. At the end of each program, the points are totaled and at seasons' end, the three highest scoring teams return for the Championship match in June.

Over the season, students from 78 area schools compete for $20,000 in prize money. The money goes to the top 10 teams and is used by the schools to support the educational needs of their students. The program is sponsored by Westfield Insurance.

Last month, University School's Academic Challenge team of Fakult, O'Toole, Brian Lettrich '16, and Warren Coleman '18 earned a second-place finish at the National Academic Quiz Tournaments' Invitational in Smithville, Ohio. Their performance not only advanced them to the regional tournament in Solon in February, but also qualified them for the national tournament in Chicago in May.

Congratulations to our students!
