US Speech and Debate Team Shines at States

University School's Speech and Debate Team placed fourth out of more than 80 teams at the 2015 Ohio High School Speech League's state tournament, despite competing in only four out of 13 different events. The tournament was recently held at Boardman and Canfield high schools in Youngstown, OH.

In Public Forum Debate, the team of Aidan Brandt and Armin Ameri came in first place to win the state title. Other team results are as follows: Geoff Schoonmaker and John Mino came in third place; Chris Raguz and Will Taber won fourth place, and Ben Wesorick and Will Frankel came in fifth. The team of Carter Weinberg and Dunadel Daryoush advanced to the partial double-octa round, placing them in the top 22 Public Forum Debate teams in the state.

In Student Congress, Sami Ascha made it to the semifinal session.

In International Extemporaneous Speaking, Ashwin Veeramani advanced to the quarterfinal round, placing him in the top 24 in his event.

In Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Omer Ashruf advanced to the partial octa final round, placing him among the top 16 LD debaters in the state. Chandler Koon made it to the final round, and lost a close 3-2 decision to finish in second place. Also competing for US in Lincoln-Douglas Debate were Andrew Gilmore and Karchen Lhatoo.

Peter Paik, head coach of the US Speech and Debate Team, said, "I am very proud of our students. I also want to thank my outstanding assistant coaches: James Lewis US' 00, Raluca Manea, and Humzah Quereshy US '13 who worked tirelessly for the success of the team."
