National Merit Scholar

The National Merit Scholarship Program has announced that University School senior Stephen Gillinov is a winner in the 2015 Competition for National Merit Scholarships.

Stephen will be attending Yale University where he plans to study molecular, cellular, and development biology, as well as English.

Stephen, who started his education at University School in the Lower School, is a co-captain of the varsity cross-country team. He is also an Anderson Scholar in Science, Strnad Fellow, track and field distance runner, three-time varsity letter winner in tennis, editor for the US News, team captain for Relay for Life, and Science Olympiad competitor.

The University School student joins approximately 1000 distinguished high school seniors from around the country who have won awards financed by corporations, foundations, and other business organizations. Most of the awards range from $500 to $10,000 per year.

As reported earlier, this year, University School had nine finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition, which is among one of the highest numbers, per capita, of all high schools in the Cleveland area.

Stephen's scholarship is underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
