A Play at Reporting

University School students, Zachary Keenan '18 and Davis Klimek '16, recently joined 22 other Cleveland area high school students downtown at Progressive Field to be "Reporters for a Day" for The Cleveland Indians. The students were selected based on essays they wrote on becoming play-by-play broadcasters.

Zach and Davis observed Manager Terry Francona's daily media briefing, interviewed Tribe pitchers TJ House and Marc Rzepczynski, and learned valuable tips from Plain Dealer sports beat writer Paul Hoynes.

It was a dream come true for both young men.

"Meeting Terry Francona was an incredible experience," said Zachary. "He's really down-to-earth, and has a plethora of knowledge that he was willing to share with us."

Davis agreed, saying, "Mr. Francona was extremely well spoken and his passion for baseball and the Tribe was readily apparent, as was his in-depth baseball knowledge. I will always remember his advice and encouragement."

Zachary, who is a broadcaster for US's Sports Programming Network (USPN), was the voice of US hockey this year. His biggest USPN gig was doing play-by-play announcing at Nationwide Arena for the hockey state semifinal.

"The thrill of being in the press box wearing a headset is incredible," Zachary enthused. "Being behind a microphone, describing the action of hockey, and other sports like baseball, basketball, or lacrosse feels so natural to me."

Davis said he has always wanted to become a broadcaster because of his love for sports and the way sportscasters bring a game to life.

"I grew up listening to Tom Hamilton call Indians baseball games on the radio, and when I listened to his play-by-play commentary, I always felt like I was at Jacobs Field watching the game," he said. "Hamilton's talent is what inspires me to become a sports broadcaster."
