"The Championship Word Is..."

Students at the US Shaker Campus have been busy bees preparing for division-level spelling competitions as part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee program.

Fifteen Middle School students competed to earn the title of US Middle School Champion and to qualify for Northeast Ohio Media Group's Cuyahoga County Scripps Spelling Bee. Henry Warren came first place, Arthur Li came in second place, and Henry Massey came in third. The championship word was "Assyrian."

Since Henry Warren is a sixth grader, he is ineligible to represent University School at the regional bee. Therefore, Henry Massey, the highest placing seventh/eighth grader, will represent US at Cuyahoga Community College on Saturday, March 5.

In the Lower School, 13 fourth and fifth graders participated in the bee, which lasted 18 rounds before the winner, fifth grader Braedon Olsen, was declared.  Fifth graders Alex Karavolos and Rohan Desai placed second and third, respectively. The championship word was "architecture."

Every fall, tens of thousands of schools enroll in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. During the fall and winter, schools conduct spelling bee programs at the classroom, grade, and/or school level, and send their spelling champions to the next level of competition as designated by their local spelling bee sponsors.
