US Senior Named National Merit Scholar

The National Merit Scholarship Program has announced that University School senior Henry Shapard is a winner in the 2016 Competition for National Merit Scholarships.

Henry will be attending Yale University where he plans to study music and history.

Henry, who started his education at University School in Kindergarten, is the recipient of the 2016 Phi Beta Kappa Award. He is a Davey Fellow studying classical music criticism and is the Student Conductor of the University School Chamber Orchestra.

Outside of school, Henry serves as Co-Principal Cellist with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America and Principal Cellist with the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra.

The University School senior joins approximately 1000 distinguished high school seniors from around the country who have won awards financed by corporations, foundations, and other business organizations. Most of the awards range from $500 to $10,000 per year. As reported earlier this year, University School had four finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Henry's scholarship is underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Congratulations, Henry!
