Alumni Man of the Year

Since 1948, the University School Alumni Association annually makes an honorary award to a US graduate of 40 years or more, in recognition of outstanding service to his country or community. The Alumni Graduate Award is the highest honor bestowed upon an alumnus by his peers.

David C. Fulton, Jr. ’74, began his life-long commitment to University School when he entered as a seventh grader in 1968. Since then he has been deeply involved in the life of the School.

After graduating from US, Dave received a BA in English from Amherst College, a MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, and earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He has spent more than 30 years in financial services, and is President and Chief Executive Officer of Hartland & Co., a prominent institutional and wealth advisory firm based in Cleveland.

Dave joined the US Board of Trustees in 2001 and served as President and Chairman from 2010 to 2013. He also chaired the Investment and Finance Committees, and currently heads the Trusteeship Committee. Before being named a Trustee, Dave was President of the US Alumni Association and led the Tower Society and Annual Fund.

In addition to US, Dave has been active in the Cleveland community. He serves on two corporate boards, was Chairman of the Lake View Cemetery Association, is a Trustee of the Shaker Lakes Foundation, Urban Squash Cleveland, and College Now, and is Senior Warden of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights. Dave is a graduate of Leadership Cleveland 2014 and a member of the 50 Club.

Dave is married to Claudia, a Hathaway Brown graduate and daughter of Bill Strong ’43. Claudia and Dave have three grown sons, all graduates of US: Will ’01, Sam ’03, and Alex ’07. Dave’s brother, Chris ’76 attended US, as did his two nephews, Brooks Pinnick ’11 and Max Mueller ’15. He is delighted that two of his sons are members of the Alumni Association Board.

Dave is passionate about the history of the Western Reserve and has built a collection of books on that topic. He also is an avid skier, golfer, and racquet sports player. Claudia and Dave live in Cleveland Heights and travel frequently to their home in Vermont.
