Perfect Latin

Three Middle School students at University School’s Shaker Campus received perfect scores on the 2009 National Latin Exam, which was administered earlier this year. Eighth grader Jude Gingo earned a perfect score for the second year in a row. Seventh graders Victor Mezacapa and Jakob Weisblat also scored 100 percent on the exam.

“Latin teacher, Kathleen Nile, and I are very proud of all of our students who did so well,” said Christopher Barton, who also teaches Latin at University School. “That three of our students received perfect scores is a feat accomplished by less than one percent of 130,000 students worldwide who took the exam.”

This year, a total of 35 seventh and eighth graders participated. The awards included five gold medals, seven silver medals, the titles of Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude, as well as certificates and ribbons for outstanding achievement.

Here are the students who won an award:

7th grade, Certificate and Ribbon for Outstanding Achievement: Victor Mezacapa, Jakob Weisblat, Walker Chieffe, Christopher Thompson, Alden Siperstein, Braden McConnell, Geoffrey Svensson, Alec Frankel.

7th grade, Certificate of Achievement: Andrew Pokorny, Demetri Skopos, Hayden Pentecost, Samuel Sords, Robert Sherman, Scott Weinberger.

8th grade, Summa Cum Laude - Gold Medal: Jude Gingo, Vikram Shankar,Taggart Haag, Ben Leizman, James Murray.

8th grade, Maxima Cum Laude - Silver Medal: Patrick O’Shea, Rahul Raj, Humzan Quereshy, William Walker, Gordie Newell, Will Hilkert, Jason Gentile

8th grade, Magna Cum Laude - Patrick Koch, Rowland Mayor, Alex Taylor, Stephen Staats, Fred Suppes, Marco Oriella.

8th grade, Cum Laude - Charlie Martens, Matt Schoonmaker, Billy Lawrence.
