Greetings and welcome to University School! As you explore our website, we hope you gain a sense of the excitement, curiosity and spirit that characterizes a boy's experience in this dynamic institution. For more than 119 years, the school’s rigorous academics, strong athletics, and rich and varied arts program have produced young men of outstanding character who are superbly prepared for college and beyond. Our approach is not terribly complicated.
We understand boys. We know what makes them tick, and we respond with a curriculum and a learning environment that are especially suited to boys. They find at US countless opportunities to roll up their sleeves and learn by doing. This approach, which is rooted in the very origins of the school, appeals to the way boys learn best. It stretches them and helps to build confidence and self-reliance.
We care deeply about boys. We focus on building caring, trusting relationships with each student so that he feels known and loved. We practice this philosophy every day and have made it central to our mission. Talented and dedicated faculty members not only teach: they serve as mentors, sponsors, and coaches who are always there for guidance and support. Small classes within a close-knit community enable every student to receive the individual attention he needs.
We speak openly about values and believe in teaching values. Our motto, "Responsibility, Loyalty, Consideration," is our guide. Students learn personal responsibility and accountability, they learn to be loyal to their friends and to their school, and they learn consideration. Far from a quaint, outmoded notion, consideration is respect in practice. Genuine respect for others begins with how we treat each other on a daily basis.
Finally, University School is a particularly exciting place to be now as we move forward with a bold strategic plan to position the school for its next era of excellence. In order to become the premier school for boys in the 21st century, we are giving students real-world experiences beyond the walls of the School, we are creating compelling learning spaces, and we are enhancing the professional lives of our outstanding faculty.
I strongly suspect that as you explore our website, you will want to learn more, so I invite you to come and visit the school. You will meet dedicated faculty and enthusiastic students, and you will see firsthand the traditions of dress code, close friendships, serious intellectual inquiry and spirited competition that characterize a boy's experience at US. You will begin to understand why US has been so loved and generously supported by generations of graduates since its founding in 1890. |
