Design Technology takes a modern approach to the manual arts with the integration of 2D technology, and combines it with hands on applications. Boys are encouraged to explore their own ideas and develop them in a 3D format. Emphasis is placed on experimenting with their independent ideas and applying them in a team-building environment. Project development involves classroom discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on experiences. Together with the campus makerspace, STEAMworks, these concepts can be explored using the latest in 3D printing technology, a laser cutter, and a variety of coding and electronics opportunities. Learning to operate the machines and adhere to safety standards is also part of the curriculum.

GRADE 7
In seventh grade, design engineering provides the opportunity for boys to discover the conceptual and fabrication processes in a shop environment. They use Sketchup’s 3D software and act as young architects to design a sustainable house. During the final phase of construction, collaboration with the science department encourages these young architects to incorporate eco-systems into their projects.
GRADE 8
Eighth graders take a step back in time to the creative days of Leonardo da Vinci and design and build a model, such as the aerial screw, using Sketchup’s 3D software. They learn about the properties that affect the operation of their original design’s functionality and ultimately construct their idea out of wood and other materials resulting in a polished individual project to enjoy for years to come.
