Political Essay Contest

The Political Essay Contest featured speaker Ray Headen '78, an attorney at Headen & Co.and chair of the Community & Equity Committee for the US Board of Trustees, who spoke to the Upper School students about the importance of giving back to the community and becoming involved politically. He told the boys that they have the power to make real change in the world. 
 
After Mr. Headen's talk, Interim Headmaster Patrick Gallagher announced the winners of the competition. Andrew Weitzman '18 received first place for his essay, Cracks in the Wall: An Examination of the Wall of Separation and Its Recent Challenges, 1947-2014; Eric Miranda '20 received second place for his essay, Triumph of Human Decency: The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965; and Eric Areklett '20 received third place for his essay, Don't Kick the Can: The Case Against Soda Taxes. Honorable mentions went to Jon Blackwell '18, John-Shaw Moazami '20, and George Nageeb '18.

The competition awards students who have thought with logic and imagination about political issues and have expressed those thoughts and opinions in a clear, succinct, and provocative style.
