French Awards

Seniors R.J. McIntyre and Ben Firstenberg were recognized for their expertise in French at the awards ceremony for the Maison Française de Cleveland Annual Contest. This speech competition invites advanced students of French from schools in the region to present on an aspect of French or Francophone culture that matters to them or relates to their professional plans. Following each presentation, the members of the jury interview the candidates to gauge the range and depth of their proficiency in French. R.J. McIntyre won 1st place for his comparative analysis of dominant style trends as they connect to identity formation among adolescents in France and the United States. Ben Firstenberg won 3rd place for his analysis of voting trends in the most recent presidential elections in France and the United States.

In the National French contest, 18 US students received awards. The Grand Concours competition was rigorous, testing students’ ability to read authentic materials in French, comprehend news broadcasts and manipulate idiomatic structures in context, among others. At US, students enrolled in levels 1 through 5 took the test in March, and a vast majority received distinctions. Those who earned the highest scores in their category received national recognition for their mastery of French.
