US Seniors Named National Merit Scholars

The National Merit Scholarship® Program has announced that Eric Miranda '18 and George Nageeb '18 have been named National Merit Scholars and have each earned scholarships funded by National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Eric Miranda received Cum Laude Honors and at the induction ceremony he was described as a role model of dedication, conscientiousness, and service to others. Eric is driven to achieve in all that he does, whether he is excelling across the academic spectrum, studying economics or Chinese, developing a model for social impact investing as a Strnad Fellow, competing in Public Forum debate, winning awards for his writing, logging miles in cross-country, or performing hours of community service. Eric will attend Cornell University.

George Nageeb received the Phi Beta Kappa Award at this year's Cum Laude Society induction celebration, where he was described as intellectual and inquisitive, hard-working and humble, and one of the most accomplished students the school has ever seen. George is genuinely interested in every academic subject; while he loves the sciences, he’s also deeply engaged in his study of history, Spanish, and literature. He is an Anderson Scholar and Strnad Fellow, a Prefect, and was named the News-Herald Boys Soccer Player of the Year. George will attend the Honors Program in Medical Education at Northwestern University/Feinberg School of Medicine, a seven-year BA/MD program.

About 50,000 academically talented high school students are honored each year by the National Merit Scholarship Program, but only 16,000 are named Semifinalists. Students who qualify as Semifinalists based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test have an opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and compete for National Merit Scholarships. About 7,500 of the outstanding Finalists were chosen as Merit Scholarship winners in the 2018 competition.

Congratulations, Eric and George!
