Academy of Science Honors US & Faculty

The Ohio Academy of Science selected University School and 15 Upper School teachers to receive The Governor's Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research because of their accomplishments during the past school year.

The award honors schools and teachers who have not only provided a strong STEM curriculum, but also have encouraged participation in other activities to stimulate student interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, according to The Ohio Academy of Science.

US faculty Edison awardees are Karen Axelrod, Erik Bunce, Jason Dyke, Laura Dykes, Gayle Hammer, Terry Harmon, George Johnston, Robin Ketcham, Sara Laux, Susan McClellon, Jim Seibyl, Mike Smith, Mitch Strachan, Peter Sweeney, and Amy Wujnovich.

“These schools and teachers clearly promote and encourage student-focused, inquiry-based, science research,” said Michael E. Woytek, the Academy’s CEO. “Each of the awardees demonstrates a commitment to providing hands-on learning experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting, and they value the rigor of competing at District and State Science Day.”

The Ohio Academy of Science selected 61 Ohio schools and 672 teachers to receive the award. Each teacher will receive a complementary membership to The Ohio Academy of Science. More than 30 professionals ─ broadly representing STEM employers from business, industry, government, and academia ─ evaluated the applications in a review process.
