US Seniors Named National Merit Scholars

The National Merit Scholarship® Program has announced that Scott Bowman '17 and Adam Tropper '17 have been named National Merit Scholars and have each earned scholarships funded by National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Scott Bowman’s two-year Strnad project investigating possible hormonal factors contributing to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy earned him accolades on the regional, national, and even international levels. A notable high point came this fall when he was the only high school student to present at the European Congress on Epileptology in Prague.

Scott is also a top-ranked competitive swimmer – one of the fastest in University School history. In addition to serving as a captain of the varsity swim team and a veteran lifeguard, Scott has also proven to be an admirable role model as one of the founding Student Facilitators of the Freshman Seminar program. He will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A silver medalist in the recent 2017 U.S. Physics Olympiad, Adam Tropper blazed a trail this year for the study of post-AP, college-level physics at US. He completed his Strnad Fellowship project studying algal-coral ecosystems while undertaking additional research work in an epigenetics and stem cell lab at the Cleveland Clinic.

Adam is president of the LoPresti Board and a two-sport varsity athlete, running both track and cross country. Outside of school, he is a competitive curler and also enjoys furthering his independent study of mathematics and physics. Adam will be attending Brown University.

About 50,000 academically talented high school students are honored each year by the National Merit Scholarship Program, but only 16,000 are named Semifinalists. Students who qualify as Semifinalists based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test have an opportunity to advance to the Finalist level and compete for National Merit Scholarships. About 7,500 of the outstanding Finalists were chosen as Merit Scholarship winners in the 2017 competition.

Congratulations, Scott and Adam!
