Junior is State Champion in Lincoln-Douglas Debate

Nick Protasiewicz ’19 was named State Champion in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the Ohio Speech & Debate Association state tournament this past weekend. This is the second year in a row that US has had the state champion in this event and the sixth consecutive year that the school has had either the state champion or the runner-up.  

Under the coaching of James Lewis '00 and LD captaincy of Isaiah Paik '18, the US LD team took an unprecedented six LD debaters to the 2018 state tournament, more LD debaters than any team has ever qualified to states. 

Nehal Chigurupati ‘20 made it to the octafinals, the final 16 debaters in LD. Isaiah Paik advanced to elimination rounds. There were 88 LD debaters from across the state at the tournament.
 
The team of Akash Salgia ’18 and Anish Ganesh ’19 were Public Forum debate semi-finalists and won third place. The team of Akshat Chowksey ’18 and Sukhm King ’20 and the team of Nate Mayor ’19 and Kirin Krishnamurthi ’19 were Public Forum octafinalists. There were 78 PF teams in attendance.

In Speech events, Auryon Azar ’19 was a semi-finalist in Dramatic Interpretation, and Ashwin Veeramani '18 and Arnold von Engelbrechten '19 advanced to quarterfinals in International Extemporaneous Speaking. 

In Congressional Debate, Brady Condon '21 advanced to quarterfinals.   

Team members who competed at states but did not advance to elimination rounds were Dan Ryan '18, RJ McIntyre '18, and Saavan Patel '20 in Lincoln-Douglas; Eric Miranda '18 and Matt Wesorick '18 in Public Forum; Rahul Jagetia '18, Tim Sullivan '19, Dan Leonard '19, Conrad Hiltebrant '19 in speech events; and Wyatt Sweeney '19, Sai Karnati '20, and John DeSantis '20 in Congressional Debate.
