INTRO TO DEBATE (MIDDLE SCHOOL 7 - 8)
This day camp will introduce middle school students to the fun world of academic debate. Valuable skills they will develop throughout the week include speaking in public, formulating arguments, finding evidence, and refuting opposing views. Each day we will focus on a different controversial issue in the news. In the morning, students will be given one-on-one attention by instructors as they prepare their cases. Then in the afternoon, students will practice debating against other students and receive feedback on their performance in each debate round. The week will conclude with a debate tournament in which all students will participate. The head instructor will be Mr. Peter Paik, coach of the University School Speech and Debate Team. Assistant instructors will include former and current members of the team.
US DEBATE CAMP (HIGH SCHOOL 9 - 12)
This program is the only summer day camp in Ohio specializing in Lincoln-Douglas (LD) and Public Forum (PF) debate and is led by one of the most experienced and successful debate coaches in the country. You don't already have to be an expert debater to join. The camp will include two levels: Level 1, for students who are interested in, but inexperienced with, high-school debate; and Level 2, for experienced students who are ready to improve their skills and reach higher levels of competition in LD and PF. Both levels will be available during this week-long camp. The head instructors will be US Speech and Debate Team coaches, including Mr. Peter Paik and Mr. James Lewis. Assistant instructors will include former LD and PF competitors who have achieved success both locally and nationally.
Campers bring their own bagged lunch and drinks. Refrigeration will be provided.
