Middle School Summer Prep

University School Middle School Summer Prep is designed to do just that: prepare US students to make the best of their middle school experience!  We do this by providing classes, staffed by current University School faculty, that give students the opportunity to polish essential academic skills, enjoy a highly stimulating and fun learning environment, and build personal connections with fellow students and faculty.  For US students entering grades 6 - 8.  Limited to 22 students per class.

Summer Prep IResearched-Based Expository Writing
Being able to construct a cohesive, convincing, and compelling five-paragraph essay is considered a core essential skill at University School.  This course is a chance to practice this process in a highly structured and supportive atmosphere where students research, write, and edit with the close support of a current University School teacher.  Highlights include: researching, thesis development, writing the introduction, general paragraphing, topic sentences, fluency/word choice, providing ample proof, writing the conclusion, editing, and the use of MLA citation format.

Summer Prep II
Math and Problem Solving
Time to wake up that mathematical brain!  This course is designed for the student who can greatly benefit from a review of essential middle school math skills.  The first week of the course focuses on revisiting skills that need to be mastered prior to the start of the US school year (of course, specific to each grade level).  The second week focuses on the popular POW-style (Problem of the Week) assignment that is a hallmark of our rigorous math program.  Students will practice engaging in mathematical thinking, problem solving utilizing various approaches, and using mathematical language to communicate process, among other topics.

Please note that there is a registration deadline of July 31; no refunds will be offered if cancellation occurs after this date.  If an absence due to vacation, camp, or otherwise is foreseen, the student should not register for the classes.
