Head of School Mr. Patrick Gallagher announced Mr. James Lewis '00 as a new chair holder, recognizing him for his dedication to his students and work.
Mr. Lewiswas awarded The F. Washington “Tony” Jarvis Chair in Religion & Ethics. In the announcement, Mr. Gallagher shared, "He is energized by the ideas, practices, and convictions of all those who lived in the past. He is committed to his students’ learning, well-being, and growth in the present. He respects facts, reveres their informed and incisive use, and relishes their spirited exchange – cultivating a better future for all." Mr. Lewis is a history teacher and head coach of the Speech & Debate Team at the Upper School.
Named chair endowments at US allow the school to retain outstanding and dynamic faculty by providing additional support and professional development opportunities to its chair holders. University School has 18 funded endowed chairs.
The F. Washington Jarvis Chair in Religions and Ethics was established in 1988 by Mrs. Kay and Mr. Dudley Blossom, Mrs. Nancy O’Neill, and an anonymous donor in honor of the Rev. F. Washington “Tony” Jarvis. The charge for the chair is to guide the exploration of religious and ethical expression and strengthen the awareness of the unity between the truth of religious experience and the goodness of human community within the University School. It is devoted to promoting a community-wide appreciation of the religious dimension of human experience and to understanding the basis for decent and humane relationships between persons: ethics.
