Inspiring Academic Spaces

Shaker Heights Campus Lower School classrooms are seasonally transformed by the various theme studies throughout the year.  A journey through the primary will have boys exploring massive cardboard castles they built themselves, constructing a giant scale model of the city of Cleveland, and studying trade on the Silk Road of ancient China.

Middle School boys at the Shaker Heights Campus are surrounded by hands-on projects inside and outside of the classroom to demonstrate systems thinking.  Features such as state-of-the-art science classrooms, an innovation lab, and interactive whiteboards are designed specifically to the needs of adolescent boys.

The Upper School in Hunting Valley features a 52,000-square-foot academic wing. The facility includes more than 10,000 square feet devoted to science and research, including labs for physics, chemistry, biology and environmental science; 10,000 square feet for hands-on learning, including a robotics and rocketry lab and two computer-aided design classrooms; and academic space devoted to the humanities, including 27 classrooms for English, history, math and language.

Tools for the Artist & Maker

Boys at US are given the environment and tools to create – whether they are making art, solutions to real-world problems or both.  They are free to be musicians and engineers; programmers and painters; and singers and designers.

Our newest maker space, STEAMworks, is an innovation lab to encourage design thinking and problem solving. The space on our Shaker Heights Campus is used by kindergarten through eighth grades, and further cements the school’s position as a national leader among independent schools in the maker movement. This new space serves as a natural complement to our robust manual arts woodshop.

Newly renovated spaces at the Hunting Valley Campus provide one of the largest design and visual arts centers at an independent school. The facility is outfitted with a range of resources such as a fully-featured woodshop, metal welding bays, CAD and 3D studio labs, 2D art studio, analog darkroom, plasma cutter, and much more.

Performing arts spaces at both campuses feature beautiful choral and orchestra rooms, state-of-the-art auditorium and theater, and spaces for younger boys to move as they make music.

The Outdoor Classroom

While most schools end when you walk out the door, US just begins. With over 250 acres of outdoor classroom to explore, the possibilities are unlimited.

All age students are regularly exploring the lush forest and biosystems on site. Our on-campus maple sugaring operation is a tradition that all ages treasure. Younger students learn what it was like to live as Native American tribes of Ohio and experience the journeys of Lewis and Clark. Older students conduct extensive projects like tracking coyote populations, studying pollination with our apiary, spawning trout in our hatchery, or calculating astrological measurements with our observatory.

More adventurous boys can even learn backpacking skills, rock climbing, safety and first aid, and how to live off of the land.
