Kennon Walton '20 Wins National Essay Contest

Congratulations to Kennon Walton '20, who received a Grand Prize in the Penguin Random House national contest for his essay about why schools shouldn’t ban Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Each of the five Grand Prize winners in the 23rd Annual Signet Classics Student Scholarship Essay Contest receive $1,000 to be used toward the winner's college tuition and a Signet Classics Library for his school. US English teacher Dr. Scott Boehnen nominated Kennon's essay for the award. The contest was open to 11th and 12th graders nationwide.

Kennon responded to the question: “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been banned from a number of schools across the nation. Critics cite the immoral behavior of the characters and racism as reasons to keep the book away from students. What are your reactions to these criticisms? What arguments can you give against banning the book?"
