Spanish Honor Society Awarded Chapter of the Year

The University School chapter was honored by the national Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica.

Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) Aura was thrilled to celebrate winning the 2024 Chapter of the Year Award this year. The recipient of this award is selected by the SHH National Office and given to chapters based on the quality and quantity of activities, number of writing and artistic contributions to Albricias, and exemplary activities in promoting the goals of the SHH. Our chapter will be honored with a plaque at the National American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) conference this summer.

On May 8, SHH Aura held its award ceremony. It included a musical performance by Kingsten Lin '25, and a poetry recitation by Drew Torzok '24. Vishwum Kapadia '25 and Kareem Fareed '24 led the ceremony as this year’s Co-Presidents, and we welcomed Nate Miller '25 as Co-President for SHH Aura next year.

During the ceremony three of our seniors were honored with official SHH awards. Our Certificado de Excelencia, for having the highest GPA in Spanish out of SHH members, was awarded to Tommy Blossom '24. The Certificado de Servicios, for meritorious service to the Chapter, was awarded to Drew Torzok '24. Our highest honor a Premio de Honor, given to the best graduating member of the Chapter and registered with the SHH national office, went to this year’s chapter president Kareem Fareed '24.

In related news, Upper School Spanish teacher Alondra Pacheco was honored with the inaugural Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica Sponsor Appreciation Award given by the National Spanish Exam office. This award recognizes the dedication of a teacher who promotes the study of the Spanish language, foster excellence by administering the National Spanish exam, and leads an active SHH chapter. Ms. Pacheco currently runs the AATSP OH chapter, is on the NSE Leadership Committee, was elected as the 9-12 representative to the AATSP Board of Directors and has won both SHH Chapter of the Year and Sponsor of the Year in the past.
