University School inducted 20 seniors into The Cum Laude Society today. Head of School Mr. Patrick Gallagher opened the ceremony, and Mr. Garrett, English Department Chair and Secretary of the US chapter of the society, introduced the 20 seniors and leaders in academic achievement and in the school. Mr. Kerry Brennan, a former US faculty member and administrator who spent fourteen years at US, including seven as Director of the Upper School, delightedly returned today to deliver the keynote address.
Mr. Garrett welcomed each inductee into the society through thoughtfully compiled personal remarks shared by each student's teachers, coaches, and peers.
*Adonis Wazni was named Phi Beta Kappa of the Class of 2026.

Mr. Kerry Brennan delivered the keynote address today, returning to University School after 26 years. A known and loved member of our community, he served our school for 14 years, first as Director of the Shaker Campus, and then as the Director of the Upper School and Hunting Valley Campus.
The assembly began with the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of America the Beautiful, a musical tradition that Mr. Brennan, an accomplished musician and conductor, started here.*
He began his speech with a grammar reminder disguised at first as advice, "It's not who you know…. it's whom you know." Mr. Brennan then reflected on some characteristics we should all actively cultivate—goodness, grit, grace, and gratitude.
It was clear from his talk—covering everything from young players on a soccer field all chasing the ball in a group ("ineffective togetherness") to the recent trip of four astronauts around the moon, the farthest any humans have ever traveled (effective togetherness)—that he understands boys, and especially those who are driven to build a successful and rewarding life.
He reminded the boys to "get off the train" once in a while and focus on something beyond continual achievement; and to "honor who you are, and the rest will follow."
The University School community thanks Mr. Brennan for sharing his wisdom, warmth, welcoming smile, and remarkable President Kennedy impression with us today.
*Mr. Brennan is also responsible for establishing the formal morning assembly, the rotational block schedule, and the House system—just a few notable examples of his many enduring contributions.
