The National Merit Scholarship Program selected six University School seniors as finalists in the 2009 Competition for Merit Scholarship Awards and one University School senior as a National Achievement finalist.
The six merit scholarship finalists and the universities they are attending are: Jeremy Aronoff, Tufts University; John Chen, Duke University; Elliott Han, Duke University; Vinay Prasad, Yale University; Geoff Sedor, Brown University; and Thomas Vandermeulen, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Vinay Prasad will receive a $2,500 scholarship, based on his academic performance, scores from standardized tests, assistance to the school and community, and recommendations from teachers.
Thomas Boyd, who will attend George Washington University, was named as a finalist in the 2009 Competition for Achievement Scholarship Awards, which recognizes prominent African Americans.
Commenting on the awards, Michael Obel-Omia, head of the Hunting Valley Campus, said, “These seven young men have distinguished themselves not only in the classroom, but also on our athletic fields, on our stages, behind our rostrums, and in community service. They well deserve the national recognition for their academic excellence, but we will best remember them as thoughtful, intelligent, supportive members of the Class of 2009.”
