Vikram Shankar has received the incentive prize in a national contest sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Contest. Vikram was honored for his musical composition, Rhapsody in C. The composition was entered into the national competition after passing the state and regional contests.
In April, Vikram won first place in the 2011 Buckeye Piano Competition in the Northeast District Senior Division (ages 15 - 18). Vikram performed works by Schubert, Liszt and Debussy. The competition was held by the Ohio Music Teachers Association at Cleveland State University. On June 4, Vikram heads to the state competition at Bowling Green University.
When he's not playing piano, Vikram composes music. Last month, he entered his piano composition 'Rhapsody in C' at the National Federation of Music Clubs' competition and was awarded first place at the state level.
Vikram's music interests span a variety of genres. He has been invited as a keyboard and bass guitar participant in the Ohio Music Educators Local District Honors Jazz Ensemble for the past two years. Last year, he played rock'n'roll at NYC's Webster Hall along with two other US students, Zach Shapiro and Fletcher Barton.
