Speaking of Boys

Students, faculty and parents were treated to great insight, humor and advice from boys' expert Michael G. Thompson, Ph.D., during his recent visit to University School to kick-off the 2011-2012 Distinguished Speaker Series.

The internationally known psychologist and New York Times bestselling author spent the day at US sharing his insights on boys and what makes them "tick." 

In the morning, Dr. Thompson spoke to juniors and seniors at the Hunting Valley Campus about the college admissions process and ways to keep this often-anxious time in perspective. In the afternoon, he talked to middle school students at the Shaker Campus about friendship and popularity in a discussion based on his book, Best Friends, Worst Enemies. He later addressed over 70 faculty members in an afternoon workshop.

Dr. Thompson's visit culminated in his evening address, entitled "Speaking of Boys," which was attended by over 550 US parents and members of the general community.

Dr. Thompson is a consultant, author and psychologist specializing in children and families. He is the supervising psychologist for the Belmont Hill School, a school for boys in grades 7-12, in Belmont, Massachusetts, and has worked in more than 500 schools nationwide and abroad.

He is the author or co-author of eight books, including the bestseller, Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys. His newest book, It's a Boy!: Understanding Your Son's Development from Birth to Eighteen, focuses on the importance of undirected, free play in the lives of boys. His new book, Homesick and Happy, will be released in May 2012.

Michael Thompson has appeared on The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, 20/20 and 60 Minutes.He has been a guest on NPR's "Morning Edition," "Talk of the Nation," and "The Diane Rehm Show.

He wrote, narrated and hosted a two-hour PBS documentary entitled Raising Cain that was broadcast nationally in 2006. Dr. Thompson serves on the board of the American Camping Association and is on the Advisory Board of Parent Magazine.
