The National Merit Scholarship Program has announced nine University School seniors as finalists in the 2014 Competition for National Merit Scholarships. All of the finalists started their education at University School in the lower and middle school grades.
The finalists are:
Walker Chieffe Daniel Cushey Peter Delaney Andrew Megerian Victor Mezacapa Geoffrey Svensson Joshua Wang Jakob Weisblat Samuel Weitzman
These students are among other finalists nationwide who will compete for 8300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million and the prestigious honor of earning the title National Merit Scholar.
As reported earlier, University School senior Christopher Thompson was named a finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, bringing the total number of US students named finalists to ten (10).
All of the students are among those earning the highest scores on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Commenting on the announcement, Dr. William O'Neil, assistant headmaster and head of the Hunting Valley Campus, said, "These ten young men have distinguished themselves in the classroom and beyond. They well deserve the national recognition for their academic excellence."
"We are very pleased that so many of our students have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation," added Jenny Rifken Fisher, Director of College Counseling. "All of these young men are bright and talented, and we look forward to seeing all that they will accomplish in college and beyond."
