First graders at University School's Shaker Campus know a thing or two about taking care of man's best friend.
The students recently presented a check for $1000 to the Geauga Humane Society's Rescue Village as part of an ongoing community service activity to help animals at the shelter.
The boys baked and sold hundreds of dog treats, raising enough money to sponsor two dogs and two cats for one full year. The funds will provide food, shelter and care to the animals until they are adopted into good homes.
The first graders also donated more than 40 fleece blankets to keep the animals warm and comfortable.
"This community service leaves the boys with a good feeling because they can see first-hand what a difference they are making," said teacher Maryanne Ferraro. "Over the years, they have established a wonderful relationship with the shelter and some boys have even gone back to adopt their own pets."
