US Appoints New Football Coach

University School alumnus Ben Malbasa '96, currently head football coach at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, has been named University School's new head varsity football coach. He succeeds Jim Stephens who served as the head coach for 15 years.

In making the announcement, Assistant Headmaster, Academic Dean (K-12), and Chair of the Search Committee, William O'Neil, said, "Ben knows University School well. He was a student at US, he taught and coached at US earlier in his career, and he values US's tradition of sportsmanship and athletic excellence."

Malbasa, 36, will oversee the school's football program for grades 5-12.

At Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, Malbasa's 2014 team qualified for the playoffs and earned the program's first-ever playoff win. As head varsity football coach at Elyria Catholic, his teams compiled a 30-10 regular season record and earned two playoff berths. At Benedictine, head coach Malbasa led the team to its first playoff appearance since 2005.

After attending University School, Malbasa earned a BA from John Carroll University, an MA from St. John's College, and a JD from Case Western Reserve University.

"There have been two great influences in my life, my family and University School," Malbasa said. "University School has sought excellence in academics and athletics for 125 years, and it is exciting to have the opportunity to return to a place that has given so much to me."
