Alex Richter
Medieval Spain
April 2015
Alex Richter has a passion for foreign languages and is always looking to enhance his knowledge. Not only does he study Spanish and Hebrew, but he has recently developed a probing interest in Arabic. Alex decided to broaden his passion into a fascinating study via the Junior Research Fellows Program. Working extensively with his mentor, Mr. Michael Khoury, Alex explored the languages and cultures of Spain during the Middle Ages. On Tuesday, April 7, Alex shared his newfound knowledge with the middle school.
In his presentation entitled
Medieval Spain, Alex first took us back to a time when Hebrew, Spanish and Arabic cultures and religions coexisted together. He taught us about different alphabets that emerged and philosophers who influenced thought. He then moved the audience through time, discussing how war and religious oppression changed the landscape. Alex finished by taking us to modern Spain, pointing out that the country is still compensating for its past history. Alex spoke with confidence and authority. The amount of knowledge he had mastered was impressive.
The audience appreciated the fascinating history and language lessons learned throughout the presentation. Congratulations, Alex, on a job well done. We are proud to call you a Center for Excellence Junior Research Fellow!
