Henry Massey
A History of Cartography
February 2015
Maps, maps and more maps! That’s what you’ll find in the Massey house. Maps are one of Henry Massey’s passions and his love for them is palpable, as we saw on Tuesday, February 3 when he presented A History of Cartography to the middle school.
Henry worked closely with Mr. Reiny Frieberthauser, a beloved, retired Upper School teacher and fellow map lover. “Mr. F” came to Shaker every week to share his vast knowledge with Henry. Together, they studied fascinating topics, such as the Martellus map, thought to be used by Christopher Columbus on his voyage in 1492; the “longitude problem” and how it was solved by clocks; and modern mapping, especially GIS technology and its use by individuals and companies alike.
During his presentation, the good work that Henry did with Mr. F shone through. After discussing the topics mentioned above, he showed us a few maps from his family’s collection-- fascinating political maps that show the progression of Europe from the 1300’s to 1914-- and even a map of Ohio that he drew himself.
As the audience members perused Henry’s display at the end of the presentation, one could see their growing appreciation for the field of cartography. Thank you, Henry, for introducing us to this fascinating topic, and congratulations on being our newest Center for Excellence Junior Research Fellow.
