The stage was set for a quest of mythological proportions as Percy Jackson and his friends took center stage in University School’s production of The Lightning Thief! This electrifying rock musical—adapted from Rick Riordan’s best-selling novel—follows a teenage demigod on a high-stakes journey to prevent an all-out war between the gods. Along the way, Percy battles mythical monsters, deciphers ancient riddles, and ventures deep into the Underworld, all while navigating the challenges of adolescence.
Despite heavy rain just before curtain time (a dramatic prelude of its own), opening night charged forward with energy worthy of Mount Olympus. Featuring a powerful original rock score and a dynamic student cast, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical delivered action, heart, and humor in equal measure. Bravo to the talented cast, crew, musicians, and designers for bringing this epic story to life with such passion and creativity.
This production was particularly special for the University School community. Chris McCarrell ’09—a former US actor and Krill Drama Award winner—originated the lead role of Percy Jackson in this musical on Broadway. In preparation for the show, the cast and crew were treated to a special Zoom session with Chris, where he shared insights into performing this demanding musical, along with practical advice and backstage wisdom. It was a full-circle moment that made the production all the more memorable.
