Team America Rocketry Challenge

This week, the University School Rocketry Team successfully flew the first of three flights in the Team America Rocketry Challenge. TARC is the largest rocketry contest in the world, involving over 800 individual high school teams in a precision engineering challenge.

This year, the goal is to design build and fly a rocket with a payload of two raw eggs to an altitude of 800 feet and a flight duration of 41-43 seconds without breaking the eggs. The team flew to 833 feet, with a duration of 51 seconds, and have two more attempts to improve the score before April. The best two scores are submitted and the top 100 teams are invited to Herndon, Virginia, for the finals, with a day of meeting senators and aerospace engineers at the “Rockets on the Hill” event. The winning team is invited to internationals sponsored by Aerospace Industries Association in London.

Michael Leone '19, Trey Hammond '19, John Hollington '19, and Jacob Nathan '21 also achieved individual level 1 high power certifications. The certification through the National Association of Rocketry requires that an individual demonstrates that they can safely fly a high impulse motor in a rocket they must build without any assistance. The certification is required to fly rockets with mass over three pounds legally. Congratulations to the entire team and Coach James Seibyl '83!
